• Abu Dhabi hosts world yoga contest on Saturday

    Come Saturday, yogis from the country and abroad will unite in the Capital. The World Yoga Sports Ranking Championship to be held in Abu Dhabi for the first time will have participants from India, Thailand, Malaysia and good number of yoga lovers from the UAE.

    The event organised by Indian Yoga Federation is coordinated by Abu Dhabi-based yoga specialist Sudhaa Sridher.

    Dubai Sports Council's REPS UAE registered trainer Sudhaa has been teaching yoga for 15 years now. She is an exceptional follower of yoga and practitioner since her schooldays. An electronics and communication engineer with a safe government job in south Indian state of Tamil Nadu,

    And her popularity made the Indian Yoga Federation approach her to hold the World Yoga Sports Ranking Championship in Abu Dhabi. The championship is held to find the best practitioners of yoga.

    "They wanted to do it in the UAE for a long time and contacted me to organise this event. It will be held at India Social and Cultural Centre from 9am. There will be special performance of swing yoga from both Dubai and Abu Dhabi based local members. There will also be a hula hoop championship held with team coming from India," she added.

    Sudhaa found time to do diplomas in yoga and naturopathy, and yoga science and education, then a post graduate diploma in yoga to be followed with masters' degree in yoga and psychology.

    "I have had health benefits through yoga and wanted others to gain too. I did masters in psychology to understand the mental state of my students in a better way," the 50-year-old said.

    After 25 years in the government job she took a voluntary retirement to give full attention to her passion. Starting from women police officers in Tamil Nadu, leading yoga seminars in Malaysia, penning a book on yoga, Sudhaa went around promoting the ancient Indian practice.

    "I moved to Abu Dhabi in 2013 and am associated with gyms like Fitness First and Primal Gym. I hold training sessions for government and private sector employees. There are private sessions being held for Arab women. Also, I give online classes and hold sessions in parks and Corniche. Yoga is about making peace with your body and knowing it in a better way. I specialise in yoga therapy through traditional postures synchronised with your breathing. It is a great way to find relief from stress, anxiety and worries," Sudhaa said.
